Hycroft Towers is a mid-century modernist building by Semmens & Simpson Architects and has become a Vancouver landmark. Originally built in 1952, this building served as the premier apartment living Vancouver had to offer. The building still retains some the style and glamour of the 1950’s with lobby artwork from Lionel Thomas, terrazzo floors, and brass hardware.
All of the suites were generous square footage, all with outward facing views of the city and mountains. Wall to wall galvanized Crittall postcard windows framed the landscape and created spaces that are flooded with natural light year round. Original floor to ceiling built-ins are still present in many of the suites.
Setting this home apart is its excellent location in South Granville, its contemporary updates balanced with well maintained modernist elements, and its extraordinarily efficient layout.
This is a light filled west facing unit with an outstanding layout. From the entranceway, you’re immediately presented with the views overlooking the treetops. To your left you have original floor to ceilings built-ins paired seamlessly with new high lacquer white floor to ceiling storage.
Further into the unit you'll find that the main room is very large and has a pleasant outlook to the tree-lined street and Westside Vancouver. An updated and opened up kitchen further adds to expand the size of this room. Clean lines throughout the apartment gives many options for layout and furniture style. You can make this place feel as cozy or as modernist as you like.
Down the hallway you’ll find the main bathroom. Just to the right of the bathroom you’ll find the main bedroom. This room is again filled with natural light from the wall to wall windows. Lying in bed you get views out over the treetops and towards the mountains. Ample sized, this room can accommodate king sized furniture and large floor to ceiling storage units provide plenty of space for all of your things.
This home is reported to be very bright and indeed windows span the entire width of the home. There are beautiful evening sunsets and great light throughout the day. Even on a grey day it is still bright and that especially helps in Vancouver for 8 months of the year. Airflow is great as well, as almost all of the windows are openers.
One of the buildings main show stoppers, is its massive 6,000 square foot rooftop patio. This space offers panoramic views of Vancouver, from Burnaby mountain, the North Shore Mountains, Dowtown, Vancouver Westside, and across to English Bay. Many different seatings spaces, planters, greenery, benches, and nooks create a space that is amazingly private and intimate. There are umbrella covered tables, sun drenched loungers, wooden banquette seating, and wide open spaces. You could enjoy and glass of wine during sunset, have a dinner party at one of the dining tables, read a book in one of the wooden banquette nooks, nap in the afternoon sun on one of the loungers, or help yourself to some of the fresh herbs in the herb garden.
The location is absolutely perfect for those looking for amenity and convenience in a very well established community-oriented neighbourhood. South Granville has it all. The neighbourhood speaks to all the ages too. Meinhardts grocery store has the best Indian food buffet and perfect food to make a charcuterie board. Furniture row with King, EQ3, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, etc. The current owner remarks being able to buy a rug at West Elm and simply walk it homewalked home, it's that convenient. Small Victory coffee shop has been booming since it moved in. Get an almond croissant and coffee to go and have it up on the rooftop at Hycroft. Barney's pub is a local watering hole that makes a great breakfast and pours a good pint of Guinness. There's also the new Breakfast Table restaurant and take out at Bin4 burger. Stablehouse Bistro is tucked away on W 13th Ave and is a fantastic date spot.
The building is described as a friendly and diverse community of long term owners and the strata is described as pro-active and responsive. 1 cat is allowed and rentals are allowed with restrictions. Parking is on a rental basis.
Overall, this a very nicely laid out, thoroughly updated and extremely well situated city home. There’s lots of character in the suite and throughout the building. If you’re looking for a classic Vancouver home that doesn’t feel like a standard cookie-cutter condo, this home might be for you.
